Alright guys (and gals), this is going to be a fairly long article, but I ask that all of you do take the time to read it. (Ahem) Like some of your know, I am originally from the Mid-Michigan area, where it is more common to see people open carrying handguns and most everyone you come across is happy to discuss the firearms they own with you. When I moved to Illinois for business, I was worried about the firearm ownership culture here. As I have found out over the last few years, there are more people here than anyone outside of Illinois would expect to be Pro-2A. I was very pleased when I was introduced to this group by Rick Cancino and I have met several of you throughout the last 6 months or so that I’ve been here. I have to say, every day I am glad to read the words and thoughts posted here and on the FB page. I have “friended” most of you here on FB and for those of you I haven’t, it’s only because I didn’t feel that it was appropriate yet for me to do so as I think there is a lack of human interaction on Facebook before people allow them into their personal lives. When I was living in Michigan, I was a part of several committees with the Michigan Gun Owners Non-Profit Organization and really enjoyed the camaraderie that was created there and the dialogue that became the reference material that I studied as a beginner to firearms ownership. I met many people through that organization and still am involved as much as I can be from a 300+ miles away. Although this Facebook group creates this to a point, there is another way that it can be created that allows an even larger network of like-minded individuals to access it. I would like to create such an atmosphere here in Illinois. I started a Non-profit organization here in Illinois called the Illinois Firearm Owners Organization and I invite all of you to join and participate in spreading the word about our organization and our Forum (www.illinoisfirearmowners.org/forum/index.php). So after receiving my new dedicated .22 barrel from CMMG I was excited to slap it together! If you have a DPMS panther claw upper mount you may want to see if you can get your hands on a friend’s block style vise mount. The dedicated .22 barrel has an extension that protrudes into the upper and does not allow the receiver to seat onto the panther claw. I completed my dedicated .22 upper and hit the range only to find that I was having continuous issues with FTF (failure to feed) regardless of magazine and occasionally a FTE (Failure to Eject). I browsed the web and after random threads speculating causes, I came across Taccom3g.com‘s Reliability Kit that addressed the flaws in the .22 upper. I quickly ordered so I could finally be rid of all these issues! The first part of the kit (pictured on the left) is the pressure plug. This goes in front of your buffer to increase pressure on the .22 carrier. What can happen is that with each shot the carrier/bushing walks itself loose from the barrel extension. The extra pressure keeps the Carrier/bushing locked up to the extension and then the feed ramp stays perfectly aligned to the magazine. Otherwise the carrier will shift towards the rear and the the rounds will get caught on the feed ramp while attempting to feed. (Pressure plug on left, Enhanced Firing pin in the Center and Extreme Extractor on the Right) In the following pic you can see the pressure plug getting lined up in front of the buffer. Now you can see the pressure plug in place. This will put additional pressure on the carrier to keep it in place and avoid walking. Here is the old extractor compared to the new extractor. New extractor installed into the carrier. Removing the firing retaining pin. New on the left, old on the right. The Groove on the old firing pin was deeper to clear the retaining pin. Since the groove wasn’t as shallow the firing pin was binding against the retaining roll pin when installed. Since the firing pin was binding I carefully vised the retaining pin and then used a metal file...

Let’s face it, for some of us, punching holes in paper from 100+ yards just gets boring after a while. Sometimes you want to change things up a bit, and you just don’t feel like dragging a couple hundred pounds of steel targets and stands out to the range only to have to pack them up again. Or maybe you want to take the youngsters out and give them something safe to shoot at the gives them a rewarding reaction when their .22 pierces it. Well here is something I found on the intarwebs that’s inexpensive and fits the bill quite well. As the name implies, this target hanger kit allows you to hang your typical clay targets from 3/8″ diameter rope (included in this kit). (obligatory toes in photo for the forum members) The hangers themselves are made from a durable plastic that doesn’t break easily (thankfully), and works quite well at holding the clays, even in high winds. The clays simply clip onto the hook at the bottom, while the hook at the top grasps onto the rope. String the rope between two points and your good to go! For as simple as this kit is, it really is fun to use. We’ve enjoyed popping clays at our Mosin Nagant Range Day and just general 50 yard 22LR plinking with iron sights. The clays are both challenging and easy to sight in on. Plus having a “reactive target” gives you that instant gratification when you do your part. Occasionally we had some .22LR that would pop a chunk out of the clay without shattering the whole thing, but beyond that, it was easy, inexpensive, fun and highly recommended....
